Welcome to the Kenwood English IV Poetry Blog!

Students from Kenwood's Honors English IV classes have written poems inspired by the poems, poets and poetic forms that they've studied during this term's poetry unit. Some students wrote Ballads and Sonnets while others responded to the work of poets like e.e. cummings, Sylvia Plath and Rainer Marie Rilke. Many poems are profound, heartfelt and deeply insightful. Others are fun and lighthearted. But, all of the poems illustrate the students understanding and appreciation of the genre of poetry. We invite you to read this work and offer your comments. Thank you.

1st Day

I arrive and sit in the back corner
wondering if I made the right choice
eighty people rush in speaking at once
I see the instructor my classmates
Introduce themselves it is now my turn
I stumble over my words feeling dumb
the lesson begins I take out my pencil
and frantically write what I see Lord
don’t let him call on me sweat drips drips
drips down my forehead the lead on my
pencil breaks I stare at the tick tocking
clock finally class is dismissed now to
prepare myself for the many days to
Come.
