Welcome to the Kenwood English IV Poetry Blog!

Students from Kenwood's Honors English IV classes have written poems inspired by the poems, poets and poetic forms that they've studied during this term's poetry unit. Some students wrote Ballads and Sonnets while others responded to the work of poets like e.e. cummings, Sylvia Plath and Rainer Marie Rilke. Many poems are profound, heartfelt and deeply insightful. Others are fun and lighthearted. But, all of the poems illustrate the students understanding and appreciation of the genre of poetry. We invite you to read this work and offer your comments. Thank you.

Pretty Ugly

I knew this girl who was pretty from her head to her feet.
The one who women hated and men wanted to meet.
She walked with swag and her looks could kill,
I swear this girl could break my preacher’s will.
She took steps on high, and beauty she did know,
And when she glided pass, it was a fashion show
Her hips swayed by dancing to a beat,
And every man, everywhere her hand they wanted to keep
They all wanted to get down on bended knee.
But pass the beauty, the ugly they did not see
With all eyes on her, she would fill the room,
But her secret, to all, who would find out soon,
Behind the hazel eyes, laid a flame within
A hatred that burned and was beneath her skin
The caramel skin the females envied,
It was the source that planted the evil seed
She was neither black nor white, but somewhere on the fence
And because of that it left her without this sense,
A sense of belonging, and this she was longing for,
And she taught she would find it in the men she was always falling for
See it what always some guy filling up her head
Telling her she was pretty, things her father never said
They would come and go, she always let them in
Looking for someone to fix and mend
Her heart that was broken,
And as they filled her with lies,
They got between her thighs,
But they didn’t know she was taking their lives

They were too caught up to protect themselves
Too busy to think they were infecting themselves
And when it happened to her she was too dumb to respect herself.
And when she died,
No one even cried
And even though she tried
She gave her life but didn’t realize,
She could find love within her thighs.
